Canaima National Park
The Canaima National Park is one of the largest and most dramatic protected areas on Earth -famous for its flat-topped tepuis, sheer sandstone walls and waterfalls that turn to mist before they land. The Canaima National Park is one of the largest and most stunning protected areas in Venezuela. It covers about 30,000 square kilometer.
The Table mountains (Tepui) belong to one of the earth’s oldest geologic formations, the „Guayana Shield“ dating back to the Precambrian Era, some two billion years ago. As the climate on their plateaus differs so much from the climate of the surrounding areas the flora and fauna on the plateaus got isolated and as a consequence many of the tepuis developed their own species in a kind of microevolution.
The surrounding Gran Sabana is an impressive plateau of 10.820 square km and home to the Pemon people, and it's their town of Santa Elena de Uairen, the base of Bagheera Tours.
